DOMQUARTIER | NORTH ORATORY
Since May 2014, visitors to the DomQuartier – the cathedral museum complex – can experience a spectacular tour through 1,300 years of secular and ecclesiastical (art) history in Salzburg.
For this reason, the North Oratory of Salzburg Cathedral – looking onto Residenzplatz – has been adapted for special exhibitions. Four rooms in enfilade provide 400 m2 of breathtakingly beautiful exhibition space. The stucco stems from around the time of the consecration year of the Baroque cathedral (1628). Highlight is the so-called Rupertusoratorium, its altarpiece and ceiling frescos showing scenes from the life of St. Rupert.
The Salzburg Museum presents the Rossacher Collection and other Baroque exhibitions here at regular intervals. The former Rossacher Private Collection is devoted to design and preparatory work in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and consists of a total of 139 oil sketches, 164 hand drawings and 42 sculptural works. Its aim is to communicate the variety of designs and sketches, their spontaneity, their differently graded stages of development and the seemingly unfinished stage, and also their later purposes.
